Team Freiburg 2018/19
The seventh Jessup Team from the University of Freiburg participated in the 2019 German National Rounds in Hamburg. They dealt with questions concerning the extraterritorial application of human rights for business activities, the protection of migratory species, the rights of indigenous people and the appropriation of traditional knowledge for commercial purposes. Alena Hünermund, Helen Scholz, Jannik Escher and Siyabend Duman reached the quarter finals at the German National Rounds in Hamburg and won the Best Applicant Memorial Award and the Best Overall Memorial Award. The Team was coached by Elisabeth Andersen, Franka Trenz and Maximilian Stützel.

Team Freiburg 2017/18
The Jessup Team from the University of Freiburg, which consisted of Daniel Feuerstack, Annika Härle, Victoria Kautzner, Konstantin Sinn, and Franka Trenz, participated in the 2018 National Rounds in Kiel. The case dealt with the annulment of inter-state arbitral awards, the right of autonomous underwater vehicles to innocent passage, questions of nuclear disarmament and international humanitarian law. The Team was coached by Björn Rieder, Laura Tribess and Maximilian Stützel.

Team Freiburg 2016/17
The team from the University of Freiburg reached the semi-finals of the German National Rounds of the Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition and scored fourth of 20 competing German universities. Emre Susamci was awarded as Best Oralist runner-up. The team was able to build on the successes of previous years and only closely missed out on qualifying for the International Rounds of the Jessup Moot Court in Washington, D.C.
The team was composed of Elisabeth Andersen, Björn Rieder, Emre Susamci, Mauritz von Wedemeyer and Henri Weidel. It was coached by Felix Beck and Friedrich Arndt and supported by Prof. Dr. Silja Vöneky and her entire team.

Team Freiburg 2015/16
With its 2016 team, composed of Melanie Kistler, Dana Rolofs, Sara Faizee, Friedrich Arndt and Franka Enderlein, the University of Freiburg once again successfully participated in the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, with this year's German National Rounds in Munich.
The 2016 Compromis focused on the legality of cyber-surveillance and cyber-attacks under international law.
After the interesting and challenging phase of memorial writing, the team prepared for the oral pleadings, supported by many professors, the Jessup Alumni, Ph.D. students and renowned law firms. After a great and intense pleading weekend in a hut in the black forest, the team was ready for the German National rounds in Munich. Even though the Freiburg team could not proceed to the International Rounds in Washington D.C., it was an extraordinary, enriching and fun experience.
The 2016 Jessup Team of the University of Freiburg would like to thank its coach Felix Beck and Prof. Dr. Silja Vöneky as well as the entire staff of the Department of Public International Law and Comparative Law for their support.

Team Freiburg 2014/15
Did the state of Reverentia annex the eastern province of its neighbour Agnostica, or was it a result of the self-determination of the people?
This is just one of the highly controversial questions debated and researched upon by the 2015 Freiburg Jessup Team between September 2014 and March 2015.
Inspired by the recent crisis on the Crimean peninsula, this year's Compromis dealt with issues concerning secession, annexation, as well as the material breach of treaties and fundamental change of circumstances.
This highly topical issue did therefore not only require intense research but also forced us to focus on legal scholars' diverse perspectives and evaluations of the core principles.
Upon receiving the Compromis in September 2014, the team spent the next months working long hours analyzing every possible interpretation of the wording and its consequences. Through constructive teamwork and strong support from the coaches, by the middle of January 2015, the team was able to hand in a solution upon which everyone agreed.
After completing the written submissions, the team fully delved into preparing the oral pleadings. Numerous visits to renowned law firms in Frankfurt gave the team the opportunity to receive valuable feedback from lawyers with diverse professional backgrounds. To conclude the period of oral preparation, the team spent an extended weekend in a remote village in the Rhoen Mountains, where final details could be added to the speeches without the distractions from the city.
In Heidelberg, the Applicants faced the teams from HU Berlin and Bochum, whilst the Respondents challenged the teams of Jena and Passau. These exceptionally strong opponents provided four very exciting and high-quality matches, which as a result prevented the team from proceeding into the final rounds.
To fully sum up these six intense months of work and fun would be all but impossible. The Jessup Moot Court Competition has not only been the challenging, interesting and intense competition we all expected it to be when we applied in June 2014, but it has also left us with four new friends and a time which all of us will remember fondly for many years to come.
The 2015 Freiburg Team would like to thank their coaches, Lisa Frense, Alena Olaobaju, Anna-Katharina Hübler and Alexander Perlin, as well as Prof. Dr. Silja Vöneky and the entire staff of the Department of Public International Law and Comparative Law for their great support.
It has been an unforgettable experience for us all and we are eager to meet the members of the next Freiburg Jessup Team!

Team Freiburg 2013/14
The 2014 Freiburg team, composed of Sophie Fink, Alexander Perlin, Viola Zollitsch and Jacob Rüder, participated in the international rounds of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition from 6 to 13 April 2014 in Washington, D.C.
Freiburg achieved a solid 74th place, being one of 120 teams which all qualified to participate in the international rounds by succeeding in previous national qualifications. Freiburg's opponents were universities from Kenya, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia and eventual finalists of the Singapore Management University. The team's memorial ranked 22nd in the overall score. In the oralist ranking, Sophie Fink achieved 41st place out of more than 300 oralists.
This year's case dealt with the consequences of a large-scale oil drilling on the marine environment and in particular on rare fish species. The students had to examine under what conditions and to what extent an environmental impact assessment needs to be carried out. The case furthermore concerned the ownership of 500 years old sunken cultural heritage and issues of jurisdiction on the high seas.

Team Freiburg 2012/13
For the first time and with great success, a team from the University of Freiburg (composed of Lisa Shamiso Frense, Jakob Methodius Jürgensen, Felix Beck, Nikolas Benedict Hertel and Alena Olaobaju) participated in the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court:
The team ranked fifth (of 21 participating teams) in the final ranking of the German National Rounds and achieved the highest number of raw points consisting of individual oralist and memorial scores.
In addition, the three best oralists (of more than 80 indivual participants) came from Freiburg: Lisa Shamiso Frense was awarded as Best Oralist, Jakob Methodius Jürgensen als Oralist Runner-Up, und Felix Beck ranked third in the final oralist rankings.
